What you are looking at
A townland is the smallest traditional land division in Ireland, older than the streets and estates that now cover most of this area. The outlines are the official townland boundaries, so a house in a modern estate can be placed in its townland. Fosterstown North covers roughly 44 hectares and Fosterstown South roughly 50.
The boundaries are generalised to about 20 metres, so they are right for finding your townland and not for settling where a fence or a ditch runs. The pin marks an approximate centre between the two, not a landmark.
What this map does not show yet
- An old map beside it. A then-and-now view needs a historic map we are allowed to reproduce and can place accurately. The Ordnance Survey first-edition maps and Rocque’s map of 1760 are the candidates, and their licences are still to be checked.
- The archaeology. The features found in Fosterstown South are described on the history page. We have not plotted them, because the reports give no map reference we can verify here.
