Sport in Swords

The clubs, where they play, when they began, and why Swords is short of pitches as MetroLink and new homes arrive.

Illustrative image, not a verified photograph

Swords has grown around its clubs. Several began when an estate was built, and now the next wave of homes is putting pressure on the same pitches. This page lists the clubs we could confirm, in their own words, and what is happening to the places they play. Last checked 19 October 2026.

EstablishedFounding years and sizes below are the clubs’ own accounts, with a link to each. We have not checked them against club records, and we say so where a source is only Wikipedia.

The pitch squeeze

EstablishedA KPMG Future Analytics audit found a need for nine additional pitches in the Swords area by 2029, according to the Dublin Inquirer in November 2025. Dublin Inquirer, 19 November 2025

EstablishedMetroLink will be built on the edge of Balheary Park, and Transport Infrastructure Ireland says Fingallians will lose the smaller of its two pitches there during the works. A board member of the club said: “If pitches go away for 18 months, you could have a huge drop off in members.” Fingal’s parks officer said there was no definite timeline for the pitch works.

EstablishedFingal’s answer includes an expanded sports hub at Swords Manor, in the draft plan for the Ward River Regional Park, and floodlights and all-weather surfaces to lengthen playing hours on existing pitches. See the plans page for the park, and the MetroLink page for the line.

ProbableThe pressure will grow with new homes. Hundreds of apartments are in planning near Fosterstown (see Boroimhe and Airside). That is our reading; the article does not give home or population figures.

Still to establishWhere the nine pitches would go, who pays, and whether the Swords Manor hub has a date. The article is from November 2025, so check what has moved since.

A short history

ProbableSwords clubs followed the housing. Rivervalley Rangers (1981) and St Finian’s (1983) began in River Valley while it was still being built, and Swords Manor (1995) in Brackenstown. Wikipedia, citing the club, ties St Finian’s founding directly to plans for 419 homes. Rugby and hockey came from another direction: both began as Aer Lingus clubs.
